Welcome to Newham

Royal Docks from the air

Newham offers enormous potential as a place to live and work. It is a thriving area which is undergoing a remarkable transformation - rapidly emerging as a new centre of commerce and culture in London.

Location, Location

Situated just three miles from the City, Newham takes in much of London's revitalised docklands including City Airport, the ExCeL international exhibition centre and luxury homes overlooking the Thames.  Newham is flanked by the River Thames to the south and the rivers Lea and Roding on either side, with the beautiful Wanstead Flats marking its northern boundary.

Newham is London's best connected borough: there is easy access to the centre of London by road, rail and tube. City Airport, in Silvertown, has regular flights to domestic and European destinations, as well as connecting flights to New York, and the award-winning Stratford International Station will soon offer a high speed rail link to Paris via the Channel Tunnel. The A13 runs through the centre of Newham providing quick access to both the centre of London and the M25.

More about travel and transport in the region.

New Newham

The borough is at the centre of London's plans for the 2012 Olympic Games. Brand new venues are currently under construction in Stratford and include an 80,000-seater stadium built, an aquatics centre and a velodrome.  Stratford is also at the heart of a prestigious new development, Westfield's Stratford City, comprising Europe's largest shopping centre, and over 4,000 new homes when complete.

Newham is also experiencing massive regeneration in Canning Town and Silvertown, with multi-billion pound projects already underway to provide new homes, retail space and opportunity for new commercial development.

Newham, The Global Village

It's not just the shiny new buildings and facilities that make the borough a happening place. Newham has the youngest and most diverse population in the UK. Over 40 per cent of the 254,000 people in Newham are under 25 years old and more than 100 languages are spoken locally - from Albanian to Zhuang. All of this makes for an exciting area rich in culture, flavour and atmosphere where local people take great pride in being part of a global village. The borough's youthful vigour and creativity has fused with the traditional East End values of warmth, friendliness, community spirit and good humour to make Newham a welcoming place with a unique character.
